Travel Tips from an Esthetician: Scrubs, Ingrown Treatments, Skin Safety during travel

Any time is a great time to travel, but in the summer clients are more likely to be canceling or rearranging their scheduled treatments/appointments. It’s no secret that the summer months can bring a drop in profits due to client vacations or summer activity in general. July through August is often referred to as the “summer slump”. Estheticians have the opportunity to stay committed to their clients while they’re away by providing travel tips. Retail, skin safety during travel and body products to prepare for travel, are all topics estheticians can discuss.

The majority of Americans are not using sunscreen regularly to protect their skin from damage caused by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, according to a new survey. About 30 percent of women and less than 15 percent of men regularly use sunscreen on both the face and other exposed areas of skin, a survey suggested from cancer.gov.

Retail and skin safety education go hand in hand. SPF is arguably the most vital part of any skin care regimen. If only 30% of women and 15% of men are wearing it, then that leaves loads of room for education. Of course SPF is only one of the innumerable products we can educate on but it is a great conversation starter. Clients may not be in the treatment room as often, so consider sending an email with valuable information on summer must products or a personal email reminding them to restock their homecare for the summer.

TSA approved size items hold a place in the travel tips conversation. There are options galore for TSA retail items. Alexander’s Aesthetics has a whole section dedicated to TSA approved products, check it out here

As an esthetician I recommend the 5 basics (in my book) for travel facial care, a cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer and SPF.  During the warmer months we may need to switch up our clients skincare. Moisturizers that have a lighter consistency or less emollients can greatly benefit your client. Cleansers containing more antioxidants will help to protect against harmful UV rays. You are the skin professional and know what needs to be done to keep that skin shining all summer, so make sure to shed light on the topic.

I toss into the conversation that I have with my clients, (as a reminder) that the other skin on our body needs attention as well. Body wash that fights off bacteria can be a game changer for those  who suffer with back/body acne.  A body exfoliant or serums help smooth, even texture and assist with in-growns.
